Codie Yan is an experimental filmmaker and mixed media artist currently based in Syracuse, NY.
Yan picked up a small micro four-thirds camera while living in Singapore and began capturing the cultural nuances and daily occurrences that captivated and inspired her. From there she started to develop a vivid visual voice in both fictional and non-fictional works. Yan's previous works have been screened at the Chain NYC Film Festival, Blackbird Film Fest, Boston Short Film Festival, and Film Tasting Showcase at Syracuse University. Yan is currently finishing up her BFA in Film at Syracuse University College of Visual and Performing Arts with an accepted offer for MS in Visual Communications at S.I. Newhouse School Of Public Communications.
In my work, I use mixed mediums such as film, photography, and collage to explore the parallel of familiarity and strangeness between reality and the dream. I always think about seeking "strangeness" out of "familiarity." I try to explore the possibility through the day to day life. I look for physical entities in daily occurrences to reflect the intangible texture of the dream world. I focus on the abstract fragments of being, time, feeling, and memory – four elements that dance between the two counterparts and use them to form the metaphysic dreamscape through vivid color, visceral vignettes, and a little bit of poetry.
